Project Management Skills for the Sight Loss Sector
About the Organisation
Visionary is the UK-wide membership organisation for local sight loss charities. It connects, supports and champions local sight loss charities to ensure people living with sight loss can access the services they need, where and when they need them.
What They Needed
Staff and volunteers across the Visionary network often lead projects and events alongside other responsibilities, with little or no formal training in project management. To help build capacity and confidence, Visionary secured funding to commission a practical and fully accessible workshop on the essentials of project and event delivery.
The training needed to:
Cover core project management skills in a simple, engaging way
Be inclusive and accessible for blind and partially sighted participants
Offer tools and strategies that small charities could adapt to their own context
What We Did Together
I designed and delivered a half-day online training session, Project Management 101, tailored for sight loss charities. Twelve people attended from across the UK, bringing different levels of experience and accessibility needs.
Practical learning
The session covered the full project lifecycle, combining short presentations, breakout group activities, and live Q&A. Topics included:
Planning: project plans, risk registers, budgeting and scoping
Delivery: time management, project trackers, coordinating teams
Evaluation: gathering data, reporting outcomes, learning from experience
Participants worked in small groups to apply the ideas to real-world situations, building confidence and making connections with peers across the sector.
Inclusive design
From the start, accessibility was central. I created a plain-text version of the presentation with notes that were compatible with screen readers, and a bespoke project planning template designed to be screen-reader friendly. All activities and materials were designed to be fully inclusive for all participants.
The Impact
Feedback from participants showed strong engagement and learning outcomes. 100% of participants reported that the session either met or exceeded their expectations.
